MYTHS ABOUT HIV       courtesy of pozwatch

The key to successfully educating yourself about HIV is not just getting the facts. It is also about getting rid of the fear that creates false rumors and myths about HIV. The best way to do that is through the power of education.

So let's explore some of the popular myths about HIV and why they are untrue. Click on any of the myths below to uncover the truth about HIV.

HIV can be passed along through saliva

Does this mean I can't kiss people or share a drinking glass? No, while HIV can be found in the saliva of an a person with HIV, there is not enough of the virus present to cause infection. To date, there has only been 1 confirmed case of spreading HIV through kissing. In this case, both people had badly bleeding gums.

Sex with a virgin can cure HIV infection

This is a very popular belief in parts of Africa. Belief in this myth has resulted in tragedy, including the rape of women and girls by HIV+ men.

HIV can pass through latex

Some people believe that HIV is so small that it can get through a latex condom. This is simply not possible. When used properly, latex condoms are an effective barrier against sperm and HIV.

HIV infection only affects homosexuals and sex workers

This is perhaps one of the most dangerous myths about HIV. Although HIV was first seen among members of the gay community, HIV infection is seen in all people, regardless of age, race, sex, sexual preference, income levels, or whether you are a man or a woman.

You don't need a condom for oral sex

This is another popular, very dangerous myth that many people believe to be true. Condoms should be used for each and every type of sexual act—oral, anal, or vaginal.

I just tested positive; I am going to die soon

This is the greatest myth of all! People with HIV can live normal, productive, and healthy lives. Now more than ever, you can be positive about being positive!
